Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath, formed in 1968 in Birmingham, England, by guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward, and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, is credited with pioneering the heavy metal genre. The band's dark, heavy sound, characterized by Iommi's down-tuned, menacing guitar riffs and Butler's occult-inspired lyrics, laid the foundation for what would become heavy metal music. Their self-titled debut album, Black Sabbath (1970), and the follow-up, Paranoid (1970), are considered seminal works in the genre, featuring iconic tracks such as "Iron Man," "War Pigs," and the title track "Paranoid."

Throughout the 1970s, Black Sabbath continued to push the boundaries of rock music, developing a reputation for their dark themes, heavy riffs, and Ozzy Osbourne's distinctive vocal style. Despite lineup changes and internal struggles, the band remained influential, inspiring countless metal bands in the decades that followed. Even after Osbourne's departure in 1979, Black Sabbath continued with various vocalists, including Ronnie James Dio, who led the band through a successful era in the early 1980s.

Black Sabbath's impact on music is immense, as they are often cited as the first true heavy metal band, shaping the sound and aesthetic of the genre. Their influence continues to be felt across the metal scene, and their legacy was cemented with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
