Def Leppard, formed in Sheffield, England, in 1977, is one of the most successful rock bands of the 1980s, known for their polished production, catchy hooks, and anthemic songs. The band, featuring Joe Elliott (vocals), Rick Savage (bass), Rick Allen (drums), and guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clark, became pioneers of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (NWOBHM) movement, blending hard rock with a pop sensibility that appealed to a wide audience.

The band's breakthrough came with their third album, Pyromania (1983), produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The album was a massive success, driven by hits like "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," and "Foolin'." Pyromania's radio-friendly sound and slick production set the standard for 1980s rock, and the album went on to sell over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Def Leppard's follow-up album, Hysteria (1987), took their success to even greater heights. Despite the challenges faced during its production, including drummer Rick Allen losing his arm in a car accident, the band delivered one of the defining albums of the decade. Hysteria featured an array of hit singles, including "Pour Some Sugar on Me," "Love Bites," and "Armageddon It," and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 20 million copies sold worldwide.

The band's blend of melodic rock, powerful vocals, and state-of-the-art production techniques made them one of the most popular acts of the 1980s. Their ability to overcome adversity, particularly Allen's return to drumming using a specially designed electronic drum kit, added to their legacy as one of rock's great success stories.
